Title: Pointless Buttons
Project Description: This is the Pointless Buttons - and how brilliant it can be. It uses a lever/switch system on the inside, and causes small lights and sounds to play whenever a button was depressed. However, when one is pushed, the other will go up. As simple as this sounds, children, especially those 3-5 years old, will find it confounding and enthralling because of the fact that their natural ability to understand it makes them enjoy it, and perhaps learn. It is about 5”x5”x5” so it is easy to store. Besides this, it will have various multicolored illustrations of somewhat surrealistic value, to add to the mystery of said box and to keep visual learners more ‘into’ the box. There will be a model and a technical design provided some time later.
Expected Turnaround: It will take about 2 to 3 days if done by hand to create the box - this includes the time needed to dry the glue, get the pieces, paint it, and make sure the electronics inside are working even if they are rather simple. If given a mechanized treatment when it comes to production, it would take at most a day.
Production Schedule: It took a fairly short time to actually come up with the idea, as it’s the Pointless Box realized in a different light - one that is a bit more child-friendly. To design the box, it took all of about an hour in order to fix up the dimensions, how the buttons work, and which electronics are needed for it to function. After that, the rest of production was smooth, taking about a few days for the actual model to be constructed out of cork board and balsa wood. After it was completely put together, the box was then painted in a few ways, mostly to just give a simple example of what the box would normally look like.
Estimated cost: The estimated cost for all of this is around $150 in order to get the wood, board, and paint - not to mention the adhesives. Besides the model, it would be another $100, as the $20 per day spent making it.
Client Approval: The model itself isn’t extremely durable, but the toy will be so the children don’t break it. It also is fairly small, being only a 5” box, and provides several different kinds of simple machines.
